This is a beautifully written book that in a light hearted way not only shares with you hard core botanical information about the trees but also their medicinal and poisonous properties as well as their uses in keeping the gearboxes of cars from failing!
A young student starting out in botany would be well advised to read this book.
You will be interested to learn that there are trees that are effective aphrodisiacs!

Foreword

The trees of Central Africa are among the outstanding glories of its Territories and as Chairman of the National Publications Trust I am happy to be able to introduce to the public this book, which depicts these trees in particularly delightful fashion. The book represents a lifetime of work, and a labour of love of nature, by Mrs Olive H. Coates Palgrave.
This is the first publication by the National Publications Trust, a body formed in 1954, for the purpose of presenting, from time to time, books such as this. The Trust has received gratifying support and subscriptions from many individuals and organisations.
In order to bring the work within the limits of one volume, a selection has been made of 110 indigenous trees of Central Africa, each of which is illustrated in colour. The coloured illustrations have been reproduced from the original paintings by the Artist. Both from a scientific and an artistic point of view, Mrs Coates Palgrave has, in the opinion of the Trustees, made a contribution of national importance to the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasa land, and I have special pleasure in presenting it on behalf of the Trust and in commending it to the public.
