Introduction

The strawberry, one of nature's most appealing gifts to man, is the subject of this highly unusual volume. Accompanied by over fifty magnificent full-color plates and hundreds of black-and-white-photo graphs, here is the first comprehensive study of the strawberry since the 1917 publication of S. W. Fletcher's The Strawberry in North America. The superb illustrations include a lavish, full-color section on the strawberry in religious art. George McMillan Darrow, an internationally recognized botanist, explores every aspect of the strawberry - a delicate creation which has captured the fancy of dedicated breeders, as well as poets, painters, and kings. The history of the plant, presented in fine detail by Miss Vivian Lee, has a delightful, small drama all its own, with tales of ocean crossings, hardships, and even intrigue.
The book develops in precise terms the genetic structure, cross-breedings, and varieties of the numerous strawberry species. Large portions of this volume are devoted to detailed accounts of the experimental work on the strawberry in all parts of the world. The numerous contributors and their contributions to the development and perfection of the plant are fully discussed.
Any plant grower-professional or amateur will be delighted with this definitive and charming volume. For the general book collector with a penchant for the unusual, THE STRAWBERRY is a unique and beautiful addition to a fine collection.
George McMillan Darrow was born in Springfield, Vermont, and attended Cornell and Johns Hopkins universities. From 1911 to 1957 he was in charge of research in the Small Fruits Division of the United States Department of Agriculture. In addition to his extensive writings for that department, he has contributed numerous articles to magazines including Science and the Journal of Botany.
