Preface

This book is not intended to be a textbook or a taxonomic treatise, but a means to acquaint all people who are interested in our flora with the species of Erythrina which they might meet in Southern Africa. For this reason. the text is written as simply and as briefly as possible and all the species mentioned, including exotic species, are illustrated. All the illustrations except those of the three South West African species have been made from living material. If there are exotic species in cultivation which have not been mentioned, it is because I have not encountered them and I would be pleased if they could be brought to my attention. I have included a much simplified note on synonymy from which literature citations have deliberately been omitted as being extraneous to this particular text. I know that my prefatory remarks to the note on synonymy are an oversimplification, but they serve to illustrate a principle; one which I have found to my horror many botanists other than practicing taxonomists are ignorant of.
I hope that some measure of enjoyment will be imparted by this little book to both botanists and laymen.
