Foreword

Trees are an important part of South Africa's heritage and can play a major role in building our future. This important publication describes some of South Africa's most remarkable trees. Some serve as reminders of our history, others are part of our religious practices while others are unusually large or particularly old. The publication of this book reminds us that trees are not only part of our landscape, they are also part of our lives.
Trees such as these may be protected under the National Forests Act. The Act allows the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry to declare a tree species to be protected but also allows an individual tree to be declared as protected under certain circumstances. Members of the public are welcome to participate in identifying such trees and bringing these to the attention of the Minister.
South Africa's trees belong to the nation as a whole and their benefits should be available to our people. For this reason the National Forests Act requires that all state forests have rules of access which allow members of the public o visit the forests and enjoy their treasures.
I hope that this book will encourage all South Africans to visit our forests and to contribute to the conservation of our indigenous trees.
