VOORWOORD (translation below this)

FOREWORD

There are certainly few South African families who can surpass the Neethlings with the number of academics, theologians, educators, medics, politicians and jurists they have produced since their settlement here. Perhaps this can be attributed to the advantage that the Neethling boys had over other Afrikaner boys of their time, in terms of means for further study. The Neethling / Smuts Poor Family Fund is still available today to prospective students from these two families.
The Neethling family made a special contribution in many areas. Two of their outstanding sons from a previous century were lawyers J.H. Neethling and his namesake Rev. J.H. Neethling from Stellenbosch. The Neethlings also married other well-known Western Cape families such as the Albertyns, De Waals, Hofmeyrs, Louws, Murrays, Van der Bijls and De Villiers's.
Two Neethling daughters were respectively the great mother of adv. Tielman Roos, the controversial politician, and the wife of the latter's political opponent, Genl. J.B.M. Hertzog, the later Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Neethling in South Africa, Edith Neethling, curator of the C.P. Nel Museum in Oudtshoorn and compiler of this genealogical register.

It is a remarkable achievement for an immigrant from distant Transylvania in Romania to undertake such a huge task amidst so many other duties and setbacks along the way and then deliver the excellent end product that this work is indeed. Be assured that "these good people" (as you call the South Africans) have already made you one of the people in their hearts.
