Preface

With 56 realistic colour plates!
The insect order of Lepidoptera comprises more than 100,000 known and named species of moths and butterflies. Little wonder then that the study and collection of these beautiful creatures is necessarily a specialised task and that even an expert cannot range over the entire field comprehensively. Yet butterfly collecting, even on a modest, amateur scale is one of the most absorbing and rewarding of activities.
This book depicts some of the most resplendent species of butterflies, whose range extends over all the continents, though most of them are found in the tropics. Some of them are well-known and bear evocative popular names, such as Red Admiral, Purple Emperor, Peacock, Painted Lady, and Camber well Beauty. Others, no less elegant in shape and sumptuous in colour are more rarely seen and even more rarely captured.
The magnificent colour plates by F. Procházka give an accurate impression of the appearance of some of these most handsome specimens: and Dr J. Moucha in his Introduction and the accompanying text to the pictures discusses their structural variations, special characteristics, life histories and migrations, as well as the methods which should be adopted for capturing individual species.
The excitement of butterfly hunting and collecting can only be experienced at first-hand, but this book will convey to the ordinary reader a sense of the extraordinary variety and beauty to be found in this exotic insect world.
